MALIBU (CBSLA) — One hiker died and two others were in need of rescue after running out of water and suffering from heat exhaustion near Kanan Dume Road in Malibu.
According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, hikers requested assistance around 2:10 p.m after running out of water.
The search and rescue team responded to the area in the Malibu Hills near Kanan Dume and Edison roads.
Two hikers out of a group of ten suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration and one hiker had died by the time crews arrived.
The deceased hiker was described as a man in his sixties. His name was withheld pending family notification.
According to fire department Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores, the ten hikers had split off and gotten separated in the hills.
LASD advised the public to avoid the area saying, “Stay Away From Kanan Dume Rd/ Zuma Edison Road. Hiker Calls 911 Requesting Assistance after 6-7 Hikers Run Out of Water During Hike. Malibu / Lost Hills Search and Rescue enroute.”
