After guiding the Chapman University baseball team to the national championship earlier this week, head coach Scott Laverty was named the D3baseball.com National Coach of the Year. This is Laverty’s first national coaching honor in his 20th season as a head coach and sixth at Chapman.
Laverty and his staff were selected as the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year immediately following the regular season and proceeded to lead the team to a 14-3 record through the conference and NCAA Division III playoffs to claim the national title.
Laverty, who previously won SCIAC titles at Redlands as well, has a 482-345-1 career record over his 20 seasons with a 184-84 mark in his six seasons at Chapman.
The Panthers (44-12) beat Birmingham-Southern (of Alabama) twice on Tuesday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to set the school record for wins in a season on their way to a national title – the third title in program history and first since 2003. The Chapman pitching staff also set the NCAA Division III record with 523 strikeouts this season.
