Roundup: No. 1 Mater Dei shuts out La Mirada in Las Vegas encore

Bru McCoy recorded a sack and caught a touchdown and Bryce Young threw four touchdowns to help lead Mater Dei’s top-ranked football team to a 49-0 victory Friday at La Mirada for its second consecutive shutout.

The Monarchs (2-1 with a forfeit), ranked No. 1 in the nation by High School Football America, beat nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman of Nevada 42-0 in Las Vegas last Friday.

Mater Dei led 42-0 at halftime Friday and didn’t play its starters in the second half.

McCoy finished with two catches for 99 yards and has five sacks in three games.

The Monarchs finished with five sacks and held La Mirada (0-3) to 10 yards of offense.

UCLA committed tight end Michael Martinez had three receptions for 70 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Kody Epps also caught a touchdown for Mater Dei.

The running back duo of Sean Dollars and Shakobe Harper each had running touchdowns in the first half.

Mater Dei plays host to St. Mary’s of Stockton (0-2) next Friday at Santa Ana Stadium.

In other games Friday:

Cherry Creek of Colorado 21, No. 5 Santa Margarita 14: The Eagles (1-2) trailed 21-14 going into the fourth quarter at Trabuco Hills and couldn’t catch the Bruins. Running back Jake Thomas scored on runs of 5 and 22 yards for Santa Margarita.

Cypress 46, Santa Ana Valley 10: Garet Crenshaw passed for four touchdowns and Elias Rios returned a punt 65-yard for a score as the visiting Centurions (1-2) earned their first victory.

Yorba Linda 26, Troy 6: Keaton Haddad rushed for over 100 yards at Fullerton to lead the host Mustangs (2-0), who play host to 3-0 Capistrano Valley next week in one of the top games in Orange County. “They look real good,” Yorba Linda coach Jeff Bailey said of the Cougars. “We are excited for the challenge.”
