Mater Dei’s boys water polo team will need to continue its pursuit of the top teams in CIF-SS Division 1.
The reigning Division 1 champion lost Saturday night its first encounter with Harvard-Westlake, falling 10-5 in Studio City.
Connor McManigal, Kaden Kaneko, Warren Loth, Ian Minsterman and Cameron Reagan each scored once for Mater Dei (11-4). Goalie Garrett Bruening made six saves.
Mater Dei lost earlier this season to No. 1 Newport Harbor, 7-5. The Monarchs are ranked fourth in Division 1 behind Newport Harbor, Harvard-Westlake and Loyola.
In another nonleague game:
No. 1 Newport Harbor 11, Cathedral Catholic 10: The host Sailors edged the San Diego power to improve to 17-1.
