SANTA ANA – For the second consecutive week, Garden Grove’s running game prevailed against a ranked team as the Argonauts cruised to a 38-12 victory over No. 22 Santa Ana on Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
Garden Grove, ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 9 this week after its win over Orange in its opener, was in control throughout as it held the Saints to 203 total yards.
Santa Ana (2-1), ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 8, came into the contest averaging over 380 yards per game on the ground. The Argonaut defense was stout as the Saints only managed 101 rushing yards.
“We flew around out there tonight, our defense played amazing,” Garden Grove coach Ricardo Cepeda said. “We stopped their run game and that was key.”
Running back Mike Carrillo was the workhorse for Garden Grove (2-0) for the second straight week. The 195-pound senior carried the ball 23 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns. He added a 46-yard touchdown reception.
“We got it done in the trenches,” Carrillo said. “If it weren’t for the line, we wouldn’t have gotten this W. … The word of the week was physicality, we knew it was important to be physical.”
Garden Grove was physical from the onset as it used a 14-play, 74-yard opening drive to get on the board. The eight-minute drive was capped by an 8-yard TD pass from Jacob Zazueta to Jose Carrillo.
Zazueta finished with 127 yards through the air and 92 yards on the ground.
“The game plan coming in was to be balanced and secure the ball,” Zazueta said. “We wanted to prove a point that Garden Grove is still the team to beat.”
After a Garden Grove field goal and two Saints punts, Carrillo scored his first of four TDs, on a 1-yard run, to give the Argos a 16-0 lead at the half.
Santa Ana came out strong in the second half, marching 70 yards in 13 plays, and scoring on a 2-yard run by Drew Ramirez, his first of two TDs. A failed two-point conversion made it 16-6.
The Argonauts responded quickly as Zazueta connected with Carrillo on a 46-yard screen pass that gave Garden Grove a 24-6 lead with 2:22 left in the third.
Late in the third, the Saints moved the ball inside the Argo 30, but a pass off the hands of Nick Larriva was intercepted by Shaun Haislip.
Two plays later, Carrillo went untouched 82 yards for a touchdown that gave Grove a 31-6 cushion.
Carrillo added another 36-yard touchdown run late in the fourth to cap the scoring.
“Our kids have been fired up all week because we feel we aren’t getting enough respect around the county,” Cepeda said. “We are one of the few programs in Orange County that has won a playoff game eight years in a row. … We’re putting ourselves back on the map this year and we’re ready to make a run.”
Ramirez finished with 74 rushing yards on 14 carries. Larriva added 3 catches for 63 yards for Santa Ana.
