Southern California bosses added 124,100 workers in the 12 months ended in August as unemployment fell to 4.6 percent.
Here are 10 trends to know about the job market in Southern California taken from the state Employment Development Department’s monthly jobs report released Friday, Sept. 21.
My trusty spreadsheet combined last month’s data and compares it with data from a year ago and the average of the previous five years for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties …
1. Unemployment rate: 4.56 percent compared with 4.62 percent the previous month; 4.98 a year ago; and a 6.96 percent 5-year average. Statewide? 4.3 percent; U.S.? 3.9 percent.
2. Number of jobless: 400,500 compared with 437,000 a year ago — down 36,500 or 8.4 percent — vs. the 593,070 5-year average.
3. Jobs: 7.60 million compared with 7.47 million a year ago — up 124,100 or 1.7 percent — vs. the 7.11 million 5-year average.
4. Job growth: Cooling! Up 1.7 percent in a year compared with 1.9 a year ago and 2.6 percent two years ago.
5. Goods-producing jobs: 963,800 vs. 958,300 a year ago — up 5,500 or 0.6 percent — vs. the 917,013 5-year average.
6. Service jobs: 6.63 million compared with 6.51 million a year ago — up 118,600 or 1.8 percent — vs. the 6.19 million 5-year average.
7. Government jobs: 950,700 vs. 943,500 a year ago — up 7,200 or 0.8 percent — vs. the 953,995 5-year average.
8. Los Angeles County: 5.1 percent unemployment in August — 38th highest out of the state’s 58 counties. Job growth? 1.4 percent in a year.
9. Orange County : 3.1 percent unemployment — No. 8 statewide. Job growth? 0.68 percent in a year.
10. Inland Empire: 4.5 percent unemployment; job growth of 3.54 percent. Riverside County’s unemployment of 4.7 percent ranked 33rd highest statewide; San Bernardino County’s 4.2 percent rate ranked No. 27 in California.
