UFC 227: Weili Zhang ruins Danielle Taylor’s homecoming with unanimous decision win

LOS ANGELES – In her UFC debut, Weili Zhang spoiled the Southern California homecoming for Lancaster’s Danielle Taylor.

Zhang, from China, defeated Taylor by unanimous decision (29-28 on all three scorecards) in a strawweight fight.

Taylor, is also a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at the Pitchess Detention Center South Facility in Castaic.

This was Taylor fifth fight in the UFC.

Zhang came out the aggressor in the opening round, eventually getting the lone takedown of the fight. After taking a couple of strikes, Taylor, showed her elusiveness to roll over and go for a heel hook submission.

Zhang and Taylor finally got back to their feet to finish the round. Zhang continued pressing in the second round, but it was Taylor who closed the round strong with a clean right hand as the buzzer ended.

Marlon Vera goes to the body for TKO of Wuliji Buren

Marlon Vera needed one shot and delivered.

The Ecuadorean bantamweight, who trains with Team Oyama in Orange County, dropped Wuliji Buren with a vicious left to the body to earn the TKO victory Saturday in the opening bout at UFC 227 on Saturday at Staples Center.

Vera (11-5-1), who picked up the pace late in the second round, took the Chinese native down and stayed aggressive in the final minute. With Buren against the Octagon, Vera went downstairs with a shot to the liver.

Buren (10-6) went down immediately. Vera followed with two punches before referee Frank Trigg called the fight at 4:53 of the round.
