Orange County football top 25 for Week 1 of the season

The Register’s Orange County football top 25 poll:

Monarchs beat Bishop Amat by 28 points on Friday. Last year, they beat Bishop Amat by 24 points in the season opener.

2. Orange Lutheran 1-0 (116)

The Lancers’ 27-7 victory over San Juan Hills throws no shade on team’s prospects for 2018.

3. JSerra 1-0 (115)

Lions’ 49-7 win over Corona del Mar makes one think this might be JSerra’s best football team.

4. Mission Viejo 1-0 (114)

Mr. Versatility Akili Arnold returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdowns in a 34-10 win over Liberty.

5. Santa Margarita 1-0 (103)

Fine debut for sophomore QB Peter Costelli – 314 passing yards, 6 passing TDs vs. Downey.

6. San Clemente 1-0 (99)

RJ Donaldson ran for 140 yards, JJ Jenkins had 146 yards receiving vs. Oceanside.

7. Servite 1-0 (94)

Offense staggered a bit, so defense and special teams carried Friars to win over Bakersfield.

8. La Habra 0-1 (88)

Highlanders lost to Upland 24-12, but don’t read much into it; Upland is No. 2 in this week’s Division 2 top 10.

9. Corona del Mar 0-1 (82)

Sea Kings got buzz-sawed 49-7 by a JSerra team that is going to buzz-saw a lot of teams this season.

10. Tesoro 1-0 (79)

Maybe we should have seen the Titans’ 17-6 win over Edison coming given all the talk about Tesoro’s defense.
