Comic-Con 2019: Can you find Waldo in the Gaslamp Quarter crowd?

Today — Saturday, July 20 — is a big day for Waldo from the beloved children’s book series “Where’s Waldo?

First, it’s National Where’s Waldo Day! Secondly, the new animated series from DreamWorks based on the book premieres on Universal Kids. And thirdly, a group of Waldos is descending on San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter outside of Comic-Con International to mark the occasions.

DreamWorks Where’s Waldo” is based around a 12-year-old Waldo who, as part of the Worldwide Wanderer Society, goes on international adventures with his best friend Wenda. With the help of their mentor, Wizard Whitebeard, the two hope to become wizard-level wanderers themselves despite their rival Odlulu getting in the way of things, according to a news release from Universal Kids.

On Saturday, men and woman dressed as the popular character walked through the Gaslamp, posing with fans who flocked to them as they spotted the familiar red and white striped shirts. The group handed out little paper versions of the latest animated rendition of Waldo to those who stopped to snap a photo to help promote the new series.

When Iolani Martins, of Tijuana, — who was cosplaying as a “Harry Potter” inspired Slytherin Hogwarts student — saw the group of Waldos she yelled “Oh my God” and promptly ran over and asked for a photo. She wasn’t the only one, from children to tattoo-covered men, the Waldos brought smiles to all who saw them Saturday.

The group is expected to wander through the area outside the San Diego Convention Center handing out giveaways throughout the day to those who find them.
