SAN CLEMENTE – The San Clemente boys volleyball team outlasted Santa Margarita in five sets, 25-17, 27-25, 24-26, 23-25, 19-17, on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
The Tritons won the first two sets but had to wait until the fifth set to put the Eagles away. Three of the five sets went to extra points.
San Clemente will play at top-seeded Newport Harbor on Saturday.
“Eight and nine (seeds) in the top 16, that’s what it is. Every match is going to be like this,” San Clemente coach Ken Goldstone said. “I thought maybe if we could close out game three, it would have been a lot easier on my heart. We didn’t let up, they kept crawling back in that third game and took that one and I go ‘Oh God, this could go five.’ ”

San Clemente (28-5) played well on defense with its blocking unit and its ability to make impressive digs to keep plays alive. Libero Owen Hamro had 23 digs for the Tritons and Marc Monier had 15. The blocking unit, led by Eli Crane, made it difficult for Santa Margarita to establish scoring runs.
“We knew what they were going to do and vise-versa,” Goldstone said. “I thought we blocked really well, we took away their strengths. We played consistent and that’s what you have to do.”
The Tritons were dominant in the first set. They went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the set and were up by as many as eight points. A long shot by Santa Margarita finished the set with the Tritons on top 25-17.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair where the Eagles went on an 11-7 run to start the frame. After a San Clemente timeout, the Tritons went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 12 and the teams traded points from there. A kill by Crane gave San Clemente a 27-25 win and a two set lead.

Santa Margarita (22-6) overcame a five-point deficit in set three and fought to stay alive. Logan Schlingman served and scored the final point of the set to give the Eagles a 26-24 win.
The fourth set was more of the same with the two teams trading points and nobody having a lead bigger than three points. Sophomore outside hitter Noah Keelin scored the final point of the set to send the two teams to a deciding fifth set.
The two teams traded points in the fifth set and nobody built more than a one point lead until San Clemente took a 10-8 advantage into a timeout. On the fourth match point of the match, Nathan Streuter served and the Eagles hit the ball into the net to give the Tritons the win.
“This is why we played in Best in the West and why went to Redondo to play good competition.” Goldstone said. “The three seniors (Cole McDaniel, Monier, Hamro) they’re not thinking about graduation. They want to play until the end.”
Both teams tied for their league championships this season with the Tritons winning the South Coast League and the Eagles winning the Trinity League.
