RIVERSIDE – Dominic Falcon crossed his fingers with hope and smiled Wednesday night after his 500-yard freestyle race at the CIF-SS Division 4 swimming prelims.

The Ocean View senior tasted just enough success to leave himself yearning for history when he returns to Riverside City College for Friday’s 4 p.m. finals.

Falcon challenged divisional records in the 200 and 500 freestyles but finished just off the pace while qualifying first in each event.

“I’m hoping for those records,” he said. “Cross my fingers.”

Falcon, who trains with the Irvine Novaquatics, used his long and smooth stroke to cover the 500 in 4 minutes, 30.22 seconds, about 2 1/2 seconds off the Division 4 record.

He stopped the clock in the 200 free in 1:38.91, about seven-tenths of a second off the record.

Both Division 4 standards belong to former Malibu High standout Logan Hotchkiss, who is now at UC Santa Barbara, which is also the future home for Falcon.

Falcon also will be aiming to sweep the 200 and 500 for a third consecutive year.

Garden Grove sophomore Jasmine Luu helped pace the county girls in Division 4 by qualifying second in the 100 butterfly with a touch of 58.54.

In the Division 3 prelims, Costa Mesa junior Aidan Blair and Sage Hill senior Jason Schreiber paced the county boys while Sunny Hills and Crean Lutheran’s Mandy Brenner led the girls.

The Penn-bound Schreiber qualified first for Thursday’s 4 p.m. finals in the 200 individual medley with a 1:50.02 and grabbed a strong No. 2 seed in the 100 breaststroke with a 55.80.

Schreiber’s 200 IM was just over three seconds faster than his prelims time last season in Division 2. His breaststroke was about two seconds faster than his prelims time last May and just seven one-hundredths of a second behind top-qualifier Andre Yarcan of Crescenta Valley (55.73).

Blair qualified second in the 200 free (1:41.06) and a close second in the butterfly (49.86) behind Yarcan (49.81).

The Sunny Hills girls could be the county’s top team contender in Division 3. The Freeway League champion Lancers qualified all three of their relays for finals and placed Katie Cho (57.69) and Maya Lee (57.92) in the finals of the butterfly and Nicole Maslog (5:06.95) and Cho (5:06.98) in the finals of the 500 free.

Brenner qualified second in the 50 (23.61) and 100 (50.57) freestyles to Crossroads’ Katrina Mortenson.
