Latest storm drops snow in San Bernardino mountains

Just a month before the official start to summer, some San Bernardino mountain residents awoke Monday morning to a wintery scene, and snow showers are predicted for most of the week.

Big Bear Lakers are waking up to new snow this morning. Yes, snow in late May is unusual, but not unheard of. Be careful driving on mountain roads above 6,000 feet this morning. Thanks to Bob German for the photo. pic.twitter.com/lZlrik9kiD

Big Bear, Wrightwood and Lake Arrowhead reported overnight snow.

The National Weather Service is forecasting snow showers for Big Bear and surrounding mountain communities until Thursday. Friday will brighten up, with a high temperature of about 55 degrees, the weather service forecasted.

A wind advisory is in effect for both San Bernardino and Riverside county mountain towns until 11 p.m. Tuesday, the NWS said, with wind expected to reach 25 to 35 mph with gusts hitting 55-plus mph.

Monday’s snow prompted Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol to issue driving warnings for mountain travel. Tire chains are required on Highway 18 from Santa’s Village near Lake Arrowhead to Pine Knot Avenue in Big Bear. Chains are also required on Highway 330 from Lower Passing Lane to Highway 18.

CHP and Caltrans officials advise travelers in snowy conditions to have extra food and water and always carry snow chains; have plenty of gas and a fully charged cellphone.
