Did you know Brea has a core? Not like an apple, but sort of a geographical central city core that is currently a mixture of commercial/industrial with some residential.
The core starts at the northwest corner of Berry Street and Lambert Road continues east on Lambert to the 57 Freeway, south to Imperial Highway and jogs east to include the Brea Plaza Center at Imperial/Associated Road. It then continues west on Imperial, jogs west to include the Brea-Imperial center at Imperial/State College Boulevard and then heads west to Imperial/Berry Street with another jog for a small industrial area. Whew.
You can learn more about the core and getting around it from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Active Transportation Community Workshop at the Brea Civic and Cultural Center.
The family friendly workshop will be like an open house, said Jennifer Lilley, Brea’s city planner, so people can come learn about the active transportation plan, give their input and still get to their other Saturday activities.
As Breans’ needs and interests change we have to prepare for changes within the core. Perhaps a small industrial park becomes plagued with vacancies. It could possibly be repurposed into workforce apartments or condominiums.
To prepare for such changes, the city is seeking input from residents and businesses, and starting with transportation needs. For instance, should we re-active the Brea Trolley on a daily basis or increase the Senior Shuttle route for folks besides seniors?
The workshop will ask participants to discuss how they want to get around town in the future, maybe have additional walking/biking paths to more easily access downtown or other shopping areas. Also, what long-range transportation plans should we have for Brea’s future?
One thing I’d like to see is kids again walking or biking to school instead of being transported in Mom’s giant SUV. Perhaps the schools need to have some incentives for kids to walk or bike to school. I don’t know, maybe a special movie shown just to students who walk, bike or ride a skateboard to school. Just an idea.
Brea police will be on hand at the workshop to talk to kids about bike safety and the importance of always wearing a helmet when riding. There will be interactive kids’ activities, lawn games and a coloring station about safety issues, Lilley said.
“Kids are definitely welcome,” she said, “and their parents can give their input while the kids participate in their own activities.”
The city received a grant from Caltrans for the Active Transportation Plan. As Brea grows and changes, getting around town may be a challenge, probably more than it is now.
The May 4 workshop is just a kick-off for the core project. Lilley said in June there would be a design charette for the project. In addition, there will pop-up events at spots where people gather, including The Tracks of Brea, Brea Downtown, the senior center, probably the July 4 Country Fair and other events and areas where people can learn more about the core project and how it will affect how and where many of us will live, work and have fun in Brea.
Plan to give your input on May 4 or at the pop-up events.
