Harold Prince, Tony Award-Winning Broadway Producer And Director, Dies At 91

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Harold Prince, a Broadway director and producer who pushed the boundaries of musical theater with groundbreaking shows such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Cabaret,” “Damn Yankees” and “Sweeney Todd” and won a staggering 21 Tony Awards, has died. Prince was 91.

Prince was known for his fluid, cinematic director’s touch and was unpredictable and uncompromising in his choice of stage material. He often picked challenging, offbeat subjects to musicalize, such as a murderous, knifing-wielding barber who baked his victims in pies or the 19th-century opening of Japan to the West.

By the time he was 26, he had already produced his first musical — “The Pajama Game” — and won his first Tony Award. Over the next half century, Prince won a total of 21 Tony Awards, including eight for directing.

“Directing is fun, I think, and working with actors is terrific,” he previously said. “And I like actors a lot.”

Prince’s publicist Rick Miramontez says Prince died Wednesday after a brief illness in Reykjavik, Iceland.

As word of his death spread, celebrities took to Twitter to celebrate his legacy.

Hal Prince was a giant. Every footprint he left in our world changed its landscape forever.

His first email to me hangs in my office, framed. His friendship meant everything. To all of us.

The Pantages Theatre in Hollwood honored Prince Wednesday night dimming the neon lights and observing a moment a silence.

Caught On Camera: Group Of Good Samaritans Stop SUV From Overturning, Save Trapped Passenger

CORONA DEL MAR (CBSLA) — A group of good Samaritans joined forces in Orange County to stop an SUV from overturning after it jumped a curb and crashed into a tree — risking their own lives to save a passenger trapped inside.

The courageous act happened Wednesday after an SUV traveling along the Pacific Coast Highway in Corona Del Mar jumped a curb, hit a tree and began to smoke and tip over. That’s when a group of good Samaritans came to the rescue.

“My friend Jen actually told me, ‘Mike you gotta go out there’,” Mike Ramirez, one of the Samaritans who helped, said. “They need your muscles.”

Ramirez said the driver, who can be seen wearing orange in the video, jumped out of the SUV and tried to keep the vehicle from tipping over while the injured passenger was still trapped in the back seat. Immediately, more than a dozen strangers — some in flip-flops and even high heels — ran out to help.

“The first thing that came to my mind and everybody too was just you want to help,” Ramirez said. “If someone is in need of help, you just run.”

Despite concerns caused by the weight of the car or the fact that there was smoke rising from it, the group was able to upright the vehicle and pull the trapped passenger to safety.

“This whole bunch of people just came and started helping,” Patricia Euzarraga, a witness who watched the scene unfold from a salon across the street, said. “That really got me because we didn’t know if they were alive or not, you know, and they were all helping to live this really heavy car, and everybody was just trying for five minutes to get the door open. It was unbelievable.”

The three people who were in the vehicle at the time of the crash are expected to recover from their injuries.

First responders warned that it is never a good idea to run toward a car that is smoking and about to tip over. Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

Eddie Bauer, Disney Inclined Sleepers Recalled Due To Safety Concerns

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – About 24,000 inclined sleepers sold by Eddie Bauer and Disney have been recalled over concerns that infants can roll from their backs to their stomachs, causing injury and even death.

The Eddie Bauer Slumber and Soothe Rock Bassinet and the Disney Baby Doze and Dream Bassinet have been sold at Target, Kmart, Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and other stores nationwide from November 2014 until February 2017 for around $60.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Infant fatalities have been reported while using other inclined sleep products, after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, or under other circumstances.”

The inclined sleepers are rectangular shaped with a soft bottom, cushioned fabric, stand approximately two feet off the floor and are designed for sleeping or napping infants from birth to six months of age.

No babies have been reported to have been injured by the two recalled products, but issues have been reported on similar products.

Customers with the Eddie Bauer Slumber and Soothe Bassinet (model number BT055CSY) and Disney Baby Doze and Dream Bassinet (model number BT071DHS) should immediately stop using the sleepers and contact the manufacturer Dorel for a $60 voucher.

CULVER CITY (CBSLA) — French’s is beating the summer heat with mustard ice cream.

To celebrate National Mustard Day in L.A. on August 3, French’s is teaming up with Coolhaus to feature their mustard-flavored ice cream.

Why, you might ask? According to French’s website, “after 115 years of using mustard to add something bold and unique to standard fare, we thought, ‘What about ice cream?’”

Man Arrested Twice For Attempting To Kidnap 2 Girls In San Jacinto Days Apart

SAN JACINTO (CBSLA) — Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a San Jacinto man Wednesday morning who allegedly tried to kidnap a teen girl in San Jacinto on Sunday and another on Tuesday in the same area.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced shortly after 11 a.m. that 40-year-old Billy Fenter was back in custody Wednesday morning after being arrested Monday and later released on bail.

Fenter is suspected in two separate kidnapping attempts. One on Sunday and two days later on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Esplanade and San Jacinto avenues around 12:30 p.m., after receiving a call that a suspect was trying to lure a 15-year-old girl into his vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s department, witnesses reported seeing the suspect driving a black, four-door Nissan sedan with an Arizona license plate number CEJ2788 at the scene.

Deputies located and arrested Fenter on charges of annoying or molesting a child. However, he bailed out of jail on Monday.

On Tuesday evening, another report of an attempted kidnapping was filed at the same intersection. Witnesses told police the suspect was a black male adult between 30-40 years old driving a black Nissan sedan with Arizona plates.

Due to the suspect’s vehicle and physical description matching witness descriptions, deputies identified Fenter as the suspect in the second kidnapping attempt.

The victim of the Tuesday attempt also positively identified Fenter.

Deputies conducted a search for Fenter and later announced he was back in police custody.

No other details were immediately released.

‘The Whole Thing Needs To Be Nuked’: Drivers Sound Off On Chaotic LA Intersection

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Driving in Los Angeles has always been chaotic, but some say one intersection in particular is on another level.

A poorly painted intersection in the Ladera Heights neighborhood is raising eyebrows for its potentially dangerous and collision-causing arrangement.

A video originally posted on Reddit shows cars cautiously making their turns through the five-point intersection at Stocker Street and La Brea – many coming within just a foot or two of each other.

The cars in the right lane on both sides of the left-hand turn are seen trying to avoid hitting each other because the dotted lines were painted too close together.

Some locals have reported seeing crashes on a daily basis, while other drivers appeared confused about which lane their car should be in.

“This intersection is such a (expletive) show, the whole thing needs to be nuked from orbit and rebuilt”, wrote one Reddit user.

Michael Canier says he’s seen a few accidents at the location since he started working at a nearby salon a year ago, and admits he’s had his own close call.

“It is very dangerous,’ he said. “I can see how accidents are happening.”

County officials told CBSLA’s Amy Johnson they are helping the county with the construction project in the area by providing temporary lane painting. The signal lights have also been adjusted to make the intersection safer during the construction project.

Video Appears To Show Boyfriend Of Missing Monrovia Woman Rap ‘I Killed My B—-‘

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Video surfaced Wednesday of a man inside a Los Angeles bar rapping about killing and burying a person the same night a woman vanished from Monrovia.

The video showed a man who appeared to be 27-year-old Robert Camou rapping about killing someone then burying them in the dirt the same night his girlfriend, 31-year-old Amanda Custer vanished.

Michael Moore shot the video Monday night at The King Eddy Saloon in Los Angeles and said he was stunned by what he was listening to at karaoke night inside the bar.

“In my own words, it was ‘kill the…and bury her in the dirt,'” said Moore. “Everybody kind of looked around, and looked at each other, and continued with the evening.”

Moore said his video showed the man, believed to be Moore, mixing with the crowd at the bar after he finished rapping a song about he had killed someone and buried her in the dirt.

“I killed my (expletive) and buried that (expletive) in the (expletive) dirt,” the man on the video is heard rapping.

According to Moore, the man then “mentioned something about the police and that he needed to close his mouth now, and he walked off.”

Moore said he saw that same man on television hours later being led away in handcuffs.

“Same guy…no doubt in my mind,” said Moore.

Camou was arrested around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after a nearly five-hour standoff in downtown Los Angeles.

Detectives say they are aware of the rap song video but have yet to receive a copy.

Camou was the main suspect in the disappearance of Custer after sheriff’s officials said he was spotted by a witness placing his possibly unconscious girlfriend in the trunk of a gray Toyota Prius in the 600 block of Vaquero Road in Monrovia.

Sheriff’s officials said blood was found in the home where Custer was allegedly assaulted and abducted.

Amanda Custer has been missing since Monday, July 29 from Monrovia.

Authorities Wednesday announced that Camou’s car was reported to have been seen shortly after the alleged kidnapping traveling north on Padua Road in Claremont toward Mount Baldy.

“Anyone on or off road, in the area of Mount Baldy (Mount Baldy Road, Glendora Ridge Road, Glendora Mountain Road) on Monday July 29, 2019, between 9:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M., that observed Suspect Camou, Victim Custer and/or the Toyota Prius, are encouraged to contact Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau,” Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said in a statement.

According to detectives, Camou and Custer have had a volatile relationship that included “numerous domestic violence incidents,” sheriff’s Lt. Scott Hoglund said.

Court records show that Camou had been scheduled to appear in a Pasadena courtroom Monday after violating terms of his bail for earlier charges including assault and domestic violence on Custer.

He is being held without bail pending a court appearance Thursday in connection with that case, according to Paul Eakins of the District Attorney’s Office.

People who were at the bar Monday night said Camou was definitely by himself and that he left by himself.

Los Angeles police found the 2017 Prius around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday near Hill and Second Street, less than a mile from the bar.

Camou was seen lying in the back seat, occasionally pretending to be asleep, police said.

Camou refused to come out of the vehicle, but police eventually pumped tear gas into the car, flushing him out around 7:30 a.m. He was booked on suspicion of burglary and domestic violence and was being held without bail.

There was no sign of Custer, who remains missing.
