Re “This is why dozens gathered at Long Beach’s Belmont Pier for the Fish Yamaha Out campaign” (Nov. 16):

As an aspiring marine biologist at Cal State Long Beach, ocean and wildlife conservation are very important to me. This event was really exciting to be a part of. It was great to spread awareness about a cause I am so passionate about.

The oceans critically impact everyone’s lives. They are a source of food, livelihood and recreation, but they also regulate our planet’s climate and provide 80 percent of the oxygen we breathe.Overfishing is a threat to all of these critical functions. Harm done to one fish stock impacts countless other marine organisms, leading to ecosystem disruption. The United States currently has some of the best regulatory policies keeping our fisheries sustainable.

Yamaha is solely focused on increasing profits of their boat motors and is pushing to roll back decades-old policies that protect our amazing oceans. Corporations don’t deserve to have such a say in our environmental policies and the future our oceans.

The oceans need to be protected, and it’s our responsibility to do so because we, as humans, caused these issues. Protecting the environment starts with the individual, but together we can make the corporations listen to us and that is what we did at this rally.

How to be a better voter

Re “Are voters cynical now on elections?” (Question of the Week, Nov. 20):

I have encountered so many good people wherever I go, I cannot give up hope. It’s a matter of helping them understand what’s at stake if they don’t look at the big picture. God is in control; however, humans have free will to make good or bad choices.

Having worked and traveled in Germany when it was a divided country, I know what socialism looks like and it’s not pretty. I’ve seen people stand in line around the block for bananas.

If we allow big money and big government to make our choices for us, thinking it’s easier that way instead of taking the responsibility to be informed citizens, then we will reap the consequences.

Getting involved can be as simple as joining a political club or going online to look at the current groups that are actively ready for positive change, such as the WalkAway Campaign.
