Troy’s girls basketball team started two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors Thursday night against arguably the most talented and one of the most experienced teams in the Southern California.

For the first quarter, the host Warriors struggled as expected, probably even a little more.

But for the final three periods, Troy flashed the promise that could make it one of more entertaining teams to follow this winter in Orange County.

Windward outscored Troy 22-0 in the first quarter and recent UCLA-signee Charisma Osborne finished with 19 points as the reigning CIF-SS and state Open Division champion Wildcats raced to a 62-42 victory in the season opener for each team.

But the Warriors edged the Windward 42-40 over the final three periods and gained some of the experience they are chasing. Junior Aaliyah Tu’ua came off the bench to lead Troy with 12 points while freshman Hannah Stines added nine points.

Freshmen Isabella Pearson and Aliyah Gonzalez combined for three 3-pointers while Stines showed a strong left-handed finish on a give-and-go from sophomore center Endigo Parker in the fourth quarter. Stines also sank a 3-pointer in the third.

Junior Anaiyah Tu’ua added four points and four steals.

“The youngies have to learn,” Troy coach Roger Anderson said. “You can see we’re going to be good. It’s just going to (take) time and some growing pains. I told them the biggest is, one, we got to go out and have fun.

“In the second half, we actually had smiles on our faces. … We didn’t have that in the first because it’s all the nerves.”

Windward made made 8 of 19 shots from the floor in the first, including 4 for 7 from beyond the arc. Troy went 0 for 10 from the floor.

Windward finished with nine 3-pointers.

Unsigned Windward senior India Otto made four shots from beyond the arc en route to 12 points. Dartmouth signee Kaiyah Corona also finished with 12 points.

Osborne opened the game with a 3-pointer and finished with seven points in the first period. The senior didn’t play much toward the end of the game.

“It’s always nice to start strong,” Windward coach Vanessa Nygaard said. “I think (Troy) missed some shots that they would normally make. … I think it they make some of those shots, this game is very different.”

In other games:
