Three motorcyclists were killed during the morning commute on Friday, Nov. 2, in separate crashes in Costa Mesa and in Irvine.
The first fatality was reported at 5:35 a.m. on the northbound I-405 in Costa Mesa near the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp and the IKEA store.
There were initial reports that one truck was involved, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada, an agency spokeswoman.
Almost two hours later, two other motorcyclists were killed on the same freeway, in Irvine on the southbound side adjacent to the Irvine Spectrum. It appeared two motorcyclists and two vehicles were involved in the accident, said Capt. Tony Bommarito of the Orange County Fire Authority said.
It was immediately unknown what led to the crashes.
