Chino’s Taurasi leads U.S. to third consecutive FIBA Women’s World Cup title game

The United States is headed to its third consecutive FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup title game after defeating Belgium 93-77 in a semifinal game on Saturday in San Cristobal De La Laguna, Spain.

Diana Taurasi, who starred at Chino Don Lugo High School and now plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, led the Americans with 26 points, including five 3-pointers.

Breanna Stewart had 20 points and Brittney Griner had 16 for the Americans, who have won 21 consecutive World Cup games and will play Australia or Spain for the title at noon Sunday. The game is scheduled to air on ESPN.

L.A. Sparks star Nneka Ogwumike, who averaging 10.7 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field in World Cup group play, finished with three points and one rebound in Saturday’s semifinal contest. San Bernardino Cajon High School grad Layshia Clarendon, now of the Connecticut Sun, missed her only shot from the floor.

On the first made basket of the game, by Griner, the U.S. scored the 10,000th point in its World Cup history.
