1 person dead, 1 injured in single-vehicle freeway crash in Irvine

A single-vehicle crash on a freeway transition road in Irvine left one person dead and another in critical condition early Saturday morning, Aug. 18, authorities said.

Just after 12:45 a.m., firefighters with the Orange County Fire Authority were called to assist the California Highway Patrol with the crash, which occurred on a transition road connecting the northbound I-5 Freeway to the northbound I-405 Freeway, Capt. Carlos Huerta said.

Two victims were located by firefighters on scene. One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital as a critical trauma patient, Huerta said.

The CHP reported the passenger, identified as a 30-year-old Anaheim man, died at the scene. The driver, 29-year-old Adrian Marquez of Rancho Santa Margarita, suffered major injuries.

Marquez was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac truck at a high rate of speed when it ran off the road and crashed into a large metal sign pole, the CHP reported in a release.

The passenger was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Marquez was transported to Mission Hospital, the CHP reported.

It was determined that Marquez was driving under the influence of alcohol and he was subsequently placed under arrest, the CHP reported.

The two right lanes on the transition road were shut down for about two hours during an investigation, according to a CHP incident log.
